The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Imo State Council, has called on the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, to sustain the prestigious Imo Media Awards otherwise known as Governor Hope Uzodimma Media Excellence Award (GHUMEA) and ensure that winners of the 2023 edition are duly rewarded.
The call was part of a communiqué issued at the end of the Council’s Congress held on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at the NUJ Press Center, New Owerri. The meeting, presided over by the State Chairman, Comrade Ifeanyi Nwanguma, JP, deliberated extensively on issues affecting the Union, the State, and the nation.
In the communiqué, the Union congratulated Comrade Eze Adiukwu on his emergence as NUJ Vice President, South East Zone, pledging full support for his programmes and initiatives.
The Congress also drew the attention of the State Government to the deplorable condition of rural roads, particularly in the Aboh Mbaise axis, and urged urgent rehabilitation measures.
While commending the State Government’s efforts in strengthening security architecture, the Union tasked security agencies to parade the notorious criminal known as “Gentle de Yahoo,” who, it said, has continually terrorized citizens.
The NUJ further called on the Governor to direct security agencies to stop herdsmen from parading cattle along streets and major roads across the State.
On internal matters, the Council resolved to set up an Electoral Committee to midwife credible elections on or before November 2025, ahead of the expiration of the current Executive led by Comrade Nwanguma. The Committee was inaugurated during the Congress.
Raising concerns over the increasing harassment and intimidation of Journalists, the Union resolved to begin prompt documentation and reporting of such cases. It also proposed a homecoming ceremony in honour of the South East Vice President and the design of programmes to enhance constructive engagement between journalists and critical stakeholders.
