Today, January 1, marks the celebration of the New Year.

The earliest known record of a New Year festival dates back to about 2000 BC in Mesopotamia. Under the Roman republican calendar, the year originally began on March 1, but from 153 BC, January 1 became the official start of the year, a tradition that continued with the Julian calendar of 46 BC.
