…Begins WEEK with road walk
Nigerians have been advised to steer clear of acts capable of landing them to jail.
The Chairperson, International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, Imo State branch, His worship Joy Nwosu-Azuama gave the advice during a road walk organized by the women lawyers, as part of the activities to mark the 2024 FIDA Week.
FIDA members had marched from Bar Centre on Orlu Road to Ekeonunwa Market, Douglas road, bearing placards with such inscriptions as ‘Stop all forms of sexual, physical and domestic violence’, ‘Say no to rape maka nga’, ‘No means no period’, ‘My mind, my body my freedom’, ‘Enough is enough, silence allows violence’, ‘Stop child abuse maka nga’ etc.
Mrs. Nwosu Azuama who said the FIDA Week coincided with the 16 days of Activism, explained that the essence of the road walk was to create awareness on the dangers of gender based violence, such as rape, incest, domestic violence, harmful widowhood practices and many others.
She advised the public to steer clear of such acts, emphasizing that FIDA offers pro bono services to ensure justice for survivors and victims of gender based violence.
She also commended the wife of the Imo State Governor, Barr. Chioma Uzodimma for her support to FIDA in the state.
The FIDA Week chairperson, Chioma Toni-Duruaku Esq. advocated tolerance as part of the solutions towards ending gender based violence in society.
“Learning how to tolerate one another is the key to success”, she added, while disclosing that the weeklong programme will also feature lectures, empowerment of five indigent people drawn from the FIDA Clinic, thanksgiving service and dinner party.
A former Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Barr Mrs. Ngozi Njoku expressed delight that Imo FIDA was not relenting in the mandate of defending the cause of women, children and the less privileged.
