The Executive Director of Whisper to Humanity, a non-governmental organization, Maryjacobs Okwuosa, has called on all levels of government to prioritize improving the education system in Nigeria.
Speaking during a virtual press conference, Okwuosa provided updates on the organization’s Transformative Education for Young Learners and Educators project, launched in 2024.
She noted that the initiative is currently being implemented across 30 communities in four states: Imo, Ebonyi, Delta, and Cross River.
“As part of the project, no fewer than 10 schools were selected for a three-day residential capacity-building workshop. Participants including students, teachers, and parents received training on transformative education, basic mathematics, and the use of playful teaching and learning approaches. Educational materials were also distributed to the participating schools”, she added.
Okwuosa expressed satisfaction with the program’s reception, particularly in Ebonyi and Cross River states, and praised the participants for successfully stepping down the training within their schools.
She further announced the establishment of play stations in several schools, featuring card and board games, table tennis, bowling balls, and swings for younger learners.
She said the organization sponsored a half-hour children’s radio program—anchored by the students themselves, which serves as a platform for advocating inclusivity and quality education, even as she hinted that plans were also underway to introduce online engagements such as debates and competitions.
The Transformative Education project, launched in September 2024, aims to break down systemic barriers to quality education often embedded in family, community, and government structures. With a special focus on adolescent girls, the initiative envisions inclusive learning environments where both students and educators feel empowered, supported, and inspired to succeed.
