Imo state government has pledged its support for subsequent film festivals in the state, noting that events as such help to boost the economy of the state.
The Commissioner for Tourism, Hospitality and Culture, Chief Jerry Egemba stated this during the Imo International Film Festival (IIFF) Awards Night held in Owerri.
Chief Egemba, who described the State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, as a film festival-friendly Governor, underscored the importance of film, as not only a medium of entertainment but a catalyst for economic growth.
He said the festival had further highlighted the essence of governance, and commended the organizers for their distinct and unique interest in growing the industry for the development of their fatherland, particularly Imo state.
He noted that such festival usually lead to the “discovery of budding talents that were hidden, waiting to be identified, acknowledged and encouraged so that they can showcase what they have.”
Mr Everest Uche who represented the Executive Director, National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Dr. Shaibu Husseini, commended the organizers for their efforts in bringing together filmmakers, industry professionals and film enthusiasts to celebrate the festival.
He explained that the NFVCB, saddled with the responsibility of ensuring that films meet the highest standards of content and classification, recognized the critical role film plays in shaping the nation’s culture and driving economic growth.
Earlier, the President of the Imo International Film Festival, Hon. Donatus Chikezie Nkemdirim, popularly known as Don Nkems said IIFF was borne out of the vision to foster growth and development of African Films within an African context and beyond.
He said the theme, “Film: A Veritable Tool for Economic Development”, was a testament to the transformative power of cinema, adding that films have an unparalleled ability to tell stories that resonate, educate and inspire.
He commended participants and supporters, especially the state government for providing a peaceful and conducive environment throughout the three-day festival and promised that subsequent festivals would be much better.
Imo film festival which commenced on July 25th and ended on July 27th, featured Master Class, Panel Discussion, Pageantry, Film Screening and Awards to deserving Nigerians who distinguished themselves in their various fields of endeavour.
