Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Tuesday protested in Imo state to register their grievances over the high cost of living in the country.
The State Chairman of NLC, Comrade Chigaemezu Nwigwe led other members of the group on the peaceful protest in company with some security agents.
The protesters chanted solidarity songs as they marched from the NLC office in New Owerri through the State Secretariat to Government House.
They displayed placards with such inscriptions; End Poverty, End Hunger, End Naira Devalue; Support local production; Stop subsidizing the rich; Let the poor breath.
At Government House, Owerri where they were received by the immediate past Chief of Staff, Sir Nnamdi Anyaehie, the NLC Chairman, Comrade Nwigwe lamented the hardship in the country which he attributed to some harsh policies of the government.
He identified poor electricity, infrastructure deficit and hike in prices of petrol and other commodities as the major reason for the protest, noting that Nigerian workers bear the brunt of every bad policy of the government.
Describing Governor Hope Uzodimma as a worker-friendly Governor, the NLC Chairman appealed to the governor to convey the message of the workers to the President.
Receiving the protesters, Chief Anyaehie commended them for the peaceful manner they conducted themselves during the protest.
Chief Anyaehie who was in company with the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma reminded them that the Governor had done a lot to ensure the happiness of Imo workers and assured them that their message would be delivered.
Earlier during the protest, the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Ifeanyi Nwanguma, NULGE President – Okey Okere, NUT Chairman – Nwansi Philip and others bemoaned the soaring prices of goods and services in the country.
The protest also featured a prayer for a speedy response by the government.
