Senator Athan Achonu has emerged the candidate of Labour Party governorship primary held at Landmark Event Center, Owerri, Saturday.
Achonu polled 134 votes to defeat his closest rival, Jack Ogunewe, a retired general who scored 121 votes.
The Returning Officer, Callistus Ihejiagwa announced the results after the delegates had cast their votes.
“Athan Achonu, having certified the requirements by polling the highest number of votes in the primary exercise, is hereby returned as the Imo governorship candidate of the Labour Party”, Ihejiagwa declared.
Recall that Achonu was elected into the senate in 2015 on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party.
He was however sacked by the Appeal Court in December 2015 and replaced by late Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu of the All Progressives Congress.
Achonu will contest against Senator Samuel Anyanwu of the Peoples Democratic Party and the incumbent Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress.
