Following the intervention of the Advocacy for Alleged Witches, AfAW, a humanitarian organization that protects and defends the rights of those accused of witchcraft, a traditional Chief in Benin City, Edo State, Mr. Victor Ekhator has apologized to a 75-year old grandmother, Mrs. Victoria Edugie.
Mr. Ekhator had on July 31, 2024 brutally tortured and beaten the septuagenarian, accusing her of tormenting him in his dream.
A picture of Mrs. Edugie, seen by this Online Newspaper, showed bruises all over her face.
Moved by pity for the victim and in line with its core vision, AfAW petitioned the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 5 Headquarters, Benin City and the Oba of Benin Palace, demanding justice for the 75 year old grandmother.
The Director of AfAW, Dr. Leo Igwe, in his petition to the Police and the Oba of Benin, noted that witchcraft accusation and jungle justice were offences under the law, urging both the Police and the Palace to punish Mr. Victor Ekhator for his savage act and brutal assault on an innocent woman.
Victor Ekhator is billed to report to the police station today, Wednesday, August 28, 2024 and had since tendered an unreserved apology to Mrs. Edugie.
Confirming the news of the apology by Mr. Victor Ekhator at the palace of HRM Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II , Judith, the daughter of Mrs. Victoria Edugie said “on behalf of my mum, Mrs Victoria Edugie, who was allegedly accused and brutalized by one Chief Victor Ekhator, I appreciate the human rights organization, Advocacy for Alleged Witches and its team for standing and supporting my mum, because the petition written by the organization to the Oba of Benin palace had been looked into by the palace chiefs and the said Chief Victor Ekhator has apologized to my mum and he vowed never to disturb her any more. Thanks to the human rights team.”
